Redeemer University Athletics announces its 20th and 21st members of the Royals Hall of Fame Class to be inducted in November.
ANCASTER, ON – As part of Redeemer University's Alumni and Family Week, Royals Athletics is proud to announce that former CCAA Men's Volleyball Coach of the Year Wayne Harris and former All-Canadian Badminton student-athlete Owen Kurvits will be inducted as the 20th and 21st members of the Redeemer Royals Hall of Fame later this fall.
Wayne Harris - Coach
Harris' outstanding leadership and historic success with the Royals Men's Volleyball team from 2008 to 2013 has left its mark on Redeemer Athletics. During his five-season tenure, Harris guided the Royals to an impressive 57 wins and 29 losses, steering the team to four OCAA Championship appearances and securing three OCAA medals: a bronze in 2009-10, a silver in 2010-11, and another bronze in 2012-13.
Under his guidance, Redeemer Men's Volleyball captured the program's first OCAA league sport medal in 2009-10.
Harris was also recognized on multiple occasions by his coaching peers as he was named OCAA Coach of the Year in 2009-2010 and CCAA Coach of the Year in 2013.
"Wayne Harris' legacy extends beyond the wins and medals; he helped transform the culture of Royals Men's Volleyball," said James Kryger, Director of Athletics. "His commitment to his players and relentless pursuit of excellence raised the standard of Redeemer Athletics."
A skilled recruiter, Harris expanded the program's reach across Canada, including team trips out West. He provided his teams with competitive opportunities that contributed to their overall success, which is still talked about today.
Harris's influence was also felt in his ability to develop talent. During his five seasons, he coached 11 OCAA All-Stars, 3 All-Canadians, and 1 OCAA Player of the Year. He led a 5-6 team in the 2007-08 season to an outstanding 12-4 record in 2008-2009, cementing his place as one of the most successful coaches in Redeemer Royals history.
The formal induction ceremony for Coach Harris will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 3pm, before the start of the Redeemer Royals Men's volleyball game against Conestoga College.

Owen Kurvits - Athlete
Owen Kurvits will join Harris as the 21st member of the Redeemer Royals Hall of Fame. Kurvits' illustrious career from 2013 to 2017 solidified him as one of the most decorated student-athletes in Redeemer University's history, excelling both on the court and in academics.
Throughout his four seasons with the Royals, Kurvits amassed an impressive list of achievements, earning an incredible three CCAA National Championship titles.
During his time with the Royals, Kurvits' leadership and skill were pivotal in bringing the Redeemer badminton program into the national spotlight. His remarkable performance in the 2015 CCAA National Badminton Championships earned him a gold medal, and his other championship appearances led to silver and bronze medals, solidifying his status as one of the top players in Canadian Collegiate badminton.
"Owen excelled on the court and, more importantly, used his sporting platform to share more than just the game with those he met during his illustrious badminton career," said Redeemer Director of Athletics James Kryger.
"To this day, Owen continues to share his experiences, always finding ways to encourage and support athletes. Owen was, without a doubt, one of the very best Badminton in Canada. Although this induction highlights his individual victories, I have no doubt Owen will quickly share this award with the many coaches, athletes, therapists, professors, and support staff who helped equip him to become an OCAA and CCAA champion." Kryger added.
In four seasons, Kurvits was a 3-time CCAA First Team All-Canadian (2014-17), 3-time CCAA Academic All-Canadian (2014-17), 4-time OCAA All-Star (2013-17), 3-Time OCAA Player of the Year and CCAA Player of the Year, and a 4-Time Redeemer Male Athlete of the Year and 4-Time Redeemer Badminton MVP.
Kurvits' formal induction into the Royals Hall of Fame will occur at a special ceremony at Redeemer University during the Men's Basketball Game halftime on Saturday, November 30th, 2024 at 1pm when the Royals take on Canadore College.
