Redeemer's
Owen Kurvits is the 2016-2017 OCAA Men's Singles Badminton Champion. Kurvits won Provincial Gold on Saturday at Georgian College, defeating Seneca's Nicky Aung in a thrilling 3-set Final. This is Owen's third Provincial Championship of his career, winning also in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015.
In the final event of the championships, Kurvits reclaimed his No. 1 spot in OCAA men's singles, defeating Aung of Seneca 21-16, 12-21, 21-14. In the Final, Kurvits issued a measure of revenge, having been swept by Aung 22-20, 21-15 in their opening round robin match.
The Championship caps another incredible season by Kurvits, finishing with an overall record of 32-2. He was named OCAA Player of the Year for the 3rd consecutive year and also a CCAA All-Canadian for the 3rd time.
Kurvits had little trouble through the round robin matches of the Championship going 4-1 with the one loss coming to Aung. He then defeated Humber's Darcy Schmidt 21-10 and 21-8 in the semi-finals.
Next up for Redeemer's badminton star is the CCAA National Badminton Championship being hosted by Seneca College March 8-11, 2017. Kurvits has had tremendous success at the National Championships winning a silver medal in 2015-2016 and the National Championship in 2014-2015.
