October 2017 Male Athlete of the Month

The backbone of the men's soccer team, Daniel Grootenboer finished up the 2017 outdoor soccer season being named and OCAA All-star.

A key person in Redeemer's stout defense in October, Grootenboer established himself as one of the best defenders in the league this season. The Royals conceded only twice in their final 5 regular season games, running their record to 3-1-1 over the stretch.

A multi-sport athlete, Grootenboer transitioned from men's soccer, to cross country, competing for the Royals at the OCAA Cross Country Championships in London.

Daniel came in 46th in the sports marquee event on October 28th.

Profile
Name: Daniel Grootenboer
Sport: Men's Soccer/Cross Country
Year: Third

When did you start playing soccer?
When I was three years old my parents signed me up for TimBits Soccer, it was the good ol' days.

What's your major?
Kinesiology with a minor in Biology.

What's your favourite Netflix show?
Riverdale

What's one thing on your bucket list?
Going really fast in a sports car. I'm not sure I could specify how fast, just as fast as possible.

If you could meet one famous person who would it be?
Messi

What's one thing you're thankful for?
I really value my heath and ability to play and enjoy sports because it's something that is easy to take for granted. When it's gone you really miss it and realize how much it sucks when you're injured or sick.

What does it mean to you to be a Redeemer Royal?
The thing I've really noticed between the Redeemer Royals and other college sports teams is that we are a really good team together; we care about each other as teammates, and we aren't super hard on each other when we make mistakes. We want the best for each other, we support each other through the hard times, we don't get angry with each other, and we glorify God in everything we do.
