Men's Volleyball

Royals Sweep Bruins

Men's Volleyball run win streak to 4 games

The Royals Men's Volleyball stretches their win streak to 4 games as they defeat the Conestoga Condors and Sheridan Bruins over the weekend. The Lady Royals split their weekend games defeating the Sheridan Bruins on Saturday after losing to the Conestoga Condors on Friday night.

The men's team made quick work of both opponents in their matches. Redeemer swept Conestoga and Sheridan 3-0 as they did not drop a set during the weekend. In their 4 game win streak, the Royals have only dropped 1 set and that was to the Nipissing Lakers who, at the time, were the #1 team in Canada. Redeemer has dropped only 7 games all season so far which leads the OCAA West.

Redeemer's Eric Heidbuurt (Waterdown, ON) and David Klomps (Surrey, BC) led the Royals offensively over the two games. Heidbuurt had 11 points on Friday night and 12 points on Saturday while Klomps had 8 points Friday night and 18 points on Saturday.

While every win is a big one, the Royals victory on Saturday was very important as the Bruins currently sit in 6th place in the Ontario rankings and had a 4-2 record going into the game.

The men's record now moves to 5-2 as they sit tied for 2nd place in the OCAA West Division.

The Lady Royals struggled in their Friday night match but made up for it on Saturday. Inconsistency has been an issue for the team as they are struggling to put out a strong effort each time they play. The team was swept away by Conestoga 3-0 in 3 close games (25-20, 25-20, 25-22). Curtiss Straatsma (Brampton, ON) had a team-high 12 points and 7 digs. Coming into the match, the Condors had only 1 other win so far this season.

On Saturday, the women's team came out with a little more fire and defeated a strong Sheridan Bruins team 3-2 (16-25, 25-13, 17-25, 25-19, 15-12). Curtiss Straatsma once again led the Royals with 14 points while Charlene DeVries (Mossley, ON) added 9 points and 3 other players had 8 (April Passchier (Kitchener, ON), Tara Van Halteren (Richmond Hill, ON), and Elise Kollenhoven (Acton, ON)) as the Royals spread around the offense.

The Lady Royals currently sit in the final playoff position at 6th place with a 3-4 record.

Both women's and men's teams have two big games coming up before the end of the semester. The teams will travel to Humber College on Wednesday November 28th to take on the Hawks before returning home for one last game before the Christmas break on November 30th against Niagara College.
