For the second time in less than a week, a Redeemer Royals team has upset a top ranked Mohawk Mountaineer team. The Royals Women's Basketball team defeated the #8 CCAA ranked Mountaineers 72-68 on the road on Tuesday night.
The Mountaineers entered the match ranked as the #2 team in the province while the Royals held onto the #9 ranking.
After starting the season 3-0, the Royals dropped three straight heading into tonight's match. All three losses were close defeats and came to opponents ranked higher than the Royals in the standings. Tuesday night, the strong play by Redeemer finally landed them a win against a top team in the Ontario.
Mohawk held the edge after the 1st quarter leading 18-11. However, an explosive 2nd quarter by Redeemer gave the Royals the lead at half up 40-33. The Mountaineers chipped away at the lead in the 2nd half and finally moved ahead very late in the 4th quarter.

Jesseca Brown hit a 3-pointer with under a minute to go to put the Royals up by 1. Mohawk went on to turnover the basketball on their next possession, resulting in Brown going to the line to shoot free throws. Brown hit one to extend the lead to 2 points. Rebekah Couperus was fouled as the Royals in-bounded the ball. Couperus hit both free throws, extending the lead to 4 points and preserving the victory for the Royals.
Redeemer moves to 4-3 win the win while the Mountaineers fall to 6-2.
