Saints Spoil Lady Royals 2016-17 Season Opener

Royals fall 3-1 to Saints in home opener in Ancaster

A solid game from the Redeemer Royals Women's Soccer team was spoiled by a tough Saints team from St. Clair College. 2 quick goals 4 minutes apart midway through the 2nd half gave the visitors their 2nd and 3rd goals of the game as they went on to win 3-1.

The Saints opened the scoring in the 20th minute after an early goal by St. Clair's Tiffany Trembley. From there, the Royals seemed to settle down and push for the equalizer. Redeemer goalie Tanya Couperus was fantastic for the Royals in the first half with 6 saves, keeping the home team within striking distance.

It wasn't until the second half where the Saints took a stranglehold on Redeemer, scoring in the 63rd minute and 67th minute with both goals from Cassie Nicholas.

Redeemer's Catherine Gallagher scored her first goal of her Redeemer career in the 80th minute to spoil the Saints shutout bid.

With the first match of the season behind them, the Lady Royals certainly gained some valuable experience. Head Coach Caell Huyer sent out 4 first year players to start the match, all of which held their own as they recorded their first OCAA action. The Royals will be one of the youngest teams in the OCAA for 2016-2017, with a roster that includes 8 rookies.

The Lady Royals will look to rebound this Wednesday when they host the Fanshawe Falcons at 5pm.
