MEN'S BOXSCORE
Starting the season on the road on Thursday night, Redeemer was in tough, traveling to Humber College to play the Hawks. Always a difficult place to pick up a win, Redeemer was swept by the Hawks, falling 3-0 in the women's match and 3-2 in the men's.
In the women's game, Redeemer struggled to compete with the top ranked Hawks. Riding a 100+ game win-streak, the Hawks found a way to keep the Royals from gathering any momentum in the match. Set scores were 25-15, 25-21, 25-14.
Full of young talent, the Royals relied on their first year players to make an impact. Rookies Alena Reenders and
Abby Sluys led Redeemer in scoring with 8 and 7 points respectively. Veteran
Rebekah Oosterhof had a game-high 4 blocks in the loss.
In the men's match, Redeemer went the distance with the Hawks, but came out on the losing end of a 5-set thriller. The Royals dropped the deciding 5th set, 16-14.
Despite starting strong in each game, and holding the lead early most of the evening, Redeemer's flaw was in their inability to close. They found themselves chasing the Hawks late in games and never held a lead in the match, going down 1-0 and 2-1 before battling back to win the 2nd set and forcing a 5th set after winning the 4th.
The Royals took an early lead once again in the 5th set before Humber rallied, eventually closing out the match and handing Redeemer the loss.
Mitch Harris paced Redeemer with 13 Kills on the night. Pearson Stiller had a game-high 31 assists while Eli Tolkamp led all players with 21 digs.
Redeemer will now return home and prepare for their home openers, this Saturday at 1pm and 3pm against the Sheridan Bruins.
