The #5 CCAA ranked Redeemer Royals men's basketball team were handed their first loss of the season on Thursday night. The Fanshawe Falcons stunned the undefeated Royals with a 89-76 win at home to end Redeemer's 7-0 start to the season.
Fanshawe entered the game with a 4-3 record and riding a 3-game win streak. All four of their season wins however have come against opponents with a combined record of 2-21.
It looked like Redeemer was potentially on their way to their 8th win of the season, taking a 5 point lead into the 4th quarter. However, the Royals couldn't counter Fanshawe's sensational shooting in the final frame. The Royals fell victim to a team that, for a span of 10 minutes in the game, couldn't miss. Shooting an unbelievable 72% from the floor and 83% from 3-point, Fanshawe was able to score 34 points in the quarter. In comparison, the Falcons shot 43% from the field over the other 3-quarters and 33% from beyond the arc.
Despite the struggles defensively, offensively it was also Redeemer's lowest scoring game of the season as the Falcons held the Royals to just 76 points.
The men's basketball team will look to start a new streak next week when they play their final game of the semester on December 1st. The opponent, the undefeated Sheridan Bruins, will be the toughest test so far for the Royals. Averaging over 106 points per game this season, the Bruins will be a good benchmark for the Royals moving into the 2nd semester.
At stake in the marquee match-up is 1st place in the OCAA West division heading into the Christmas Break. Tip off gets underway on the 1st at 6pm with the Lady Royals and the men following at 8pm.
