In one of the most entertaining varsity matches of the year thus far, the Redeemer Royals women's volleyball team fell to the Mohawk Mountaineers Friday night 3-2. After taking a 2-0 lead over their Hamilton neighbour, the Royals couldn't hold back the surging visitors, falling 22-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-13.
For the women, it was their most complete game of the season against the talented Mohawk side. With only a few points separating the opponents in each set, it truly was a battle between rivals. Coming into the match, Redeemer had won 7 of the last 10 against the Mountaineers.
Redeemer got strong offensive output from a number of starters including a season-high 10 blocks from veteran
Rebekah Oosterhof. Oosterhof also added 8 kills and 4 aces for a total of 22 points. 1st year
Abby Sluys led all players with 15 total kills.
Despite some fatigue from Friday night's match, the Royals bounced back on Saturday to defeat the Conestoga Condors 3-1. After dropping the first set 25-21, the Lady Royals squeaked out a win in the 2nd, 26-24, before taking control in the 3rd and 4th with set scores of 25-19 and 25-18.
Once again Redeemer's
Abby Sluys and
Rebekah Oosterhof dominated offensively. Sluys had a game-high 16 kills and added 3 aces while Oosterhof had 10 kills, 5 aces, and 3 blocks.
Next up, the Royals will travel to Niagara for a mid-week tilt against the Knights on Thursday at 6pm.
