The Royals stole a pair of wins from the host Mohawk Mountaineers Tuesday night, as the Hamilton rivals battled it out on the basketball court for the first time this season.
Redeemer's basketball teams each secured the win in round of two meetings this season in OCAA league play. While both programs left Mohawk with the victory, both wins came in very different ways.
In the women's match, Redeemer led wire-to-wire, dominating the first quarter, never letting the Mountaineers get within striking distance. Redeemer took a 15 point lead into halftime, and never faltered, winning the 3rd (25-19) and 4th quarters (16-7) to secure their 3rd win of the season. The final score was 78-51.
After missing a pair of matches, Redeemer's Tobie Brinkman picked up where she left off, scoring a team high 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Julia Pavlik (16pts), Mikayla Blackburn (15pts), and Alex Webb (12pts) also hit double-figures in the win.
Redeemer improved their record to 3-7 with one game remaining against Lambton on Friday to close out the semester.
The men's match played out much differently. After a very slow start out of the gate, Redeemer found themselves down 30-14 after the first quarter. Down as many as 20 points, the Royals began to work their way back into the match in the 2nd. Redeemer pulled the lead to within 10 points, 45-35 at the half.
The 3rd quarter saw the Royals hit their stride, outscoring the Mountaineers 31-16, taking a lead that they would never relinquish. Despite a better quarter in the 4th from Mohawk, the home team couldn't pull ahead, as Redeemer's lead proved to be too large. The Royals outscored the Mountaineers in the final frame, 27-24, for the 8-point victory, 93-85.
Spencer Kerssies dominated for Redeemer with a game-high 29 points. Kerssies also was unstoppable under the basket, securing 17 total rebounds.
Jacobus Vanderpol also had a double-double for the Royals with 21 point and 11 rebounds.
Redeemer has one game remaining in 2018. The 7-3 Royals will play their final match of the semester on Friday when they host the Lambton Lions.
