Redeemer's Cross Country team opened up their season this past weekend with a visit to the Fanshawe Conversation Area in London, Ontario. Both soccer teams were also in action on Saturday against the Mohawk Mountaineers earning a split with the mountain rival.
Redeemer's Cross Country team started their competitive season on Saturday with a trip to London, Ontario. The Royals ran the Fanshawe Falcons course at the Fanshawe Conservation Authority. The annual event is one of the biggest invitational runs of the season, and the Royals had a number of strong performances in their debut.
In his first run as a Royal, Redeemer's James Scott cracked the top 30 with a 27th place finish in the 8 KM event. Coming across the line with a time of 30:33, Scott was the first Royal to finish in the Men's Race. Teammate, Kyle Maerz, was not far behind with a 41st place finish in a time of 32:31.
After a year away from the team, Redeemer's Emily Lorimer didn't miss a beat, finishing strong with a 13th place finish. Lorimer covered the 6 KM course in a time of 25:53. First year runner, Bethany Hiemstra, clocked a time of 30:22, and was second across the line for the Royals.
Redeemer will a two-week break before heading out to Seneca College for their invitational on September 28th.

Despite a well-played game, the Royals dropped their third straight match with a 1-0 decision against the Mohawk Mountaineers (3-0). A late first-half goal for the Mountaineers proved to be the difference as the Royals failed to find the back of the net for the second game in a row.
Lilly Brown was exceptional in net again for the Royals, saving 21 shots and allowing just one goal.
Redeemer drops to 0-3 but continues to challenge the top teams in the league each match. The Royals will travel to Lambton College on Wednesday searching for their first win against the winless Lions of Sarnia. Game time is 5:00pm.

The Men's Soccer team stayed undefeated (2-0-1) going into Week 3 of the season with a 2-1 win over the Mohawk Mountaineers (1-2) on Saturday. After the Mountaineers took the lead in the 24th minute after being awarded a penalty kick, the Royals got on the board in the 47th minute with a penalty kick of their own. Jeremy Petrusma netted his first of the season from the penalty spot.
The Royals took the lead midway through the second half when Zach Kingma beat Mohawk keeper, Philip Lucek, to go up 2-1.
Mohawk had a chance to tie the match after being awarded another penalty in the 90th minute. Redeemer's keeper, Linden Bontkes, held his ground however, making the save on the penalty and preserving the win for the Royals.
Bontkes finished the match with 9 saves, conceding just one goal.
The Royals take their hot start on the road on Thursday when they travel to face the winless Lions at Lambton College (0-3) in Sarnia.
