Box Score 2 It was a successful opening to the winter semester this weekend as the Royals volleyball teams both extended their win streaks to 5 games. Redeemer was on the road Friday and Saturday to Sudbury to take on the Boreal Vipers (Friday) and Cambrian Golden Shield (Saturday).
With both teams familiar with each other, having played each other before the Christmas break, there were little surprises.Â
On Friday, both teams swept the Vipers, winning 3-0 to match their first semester results.
After a close first set 25-23, the Royals took control of the match, winning 25-18 and 25-11 in the 2nd and 3rd.
Abby Sluys led all scorers with 14 total points and 10 digs. Lexi Nieman had 23 assists in the win.Â
All eleven players on the men's side saw action on Friday night in their 3-0 win. With scores of 25-14, 25-13, and 25-16, Redeemer dominated from start to finish. Both Linden Bontkes and Brady De Boer had 8 total points for Redeemer.Â
On Saturday, the Lady Royals needed 5 sets to take care of the Golden Shield. After taking a 2-1 lead, the Shield won the 4th set 25-20 to force the deciding 5th. In a wild finish to the game, Redeemer squeaked out a 3-2 win for their 5th in a row.
Abby Sluys had a career-high 27 points and set a new Redeemer record with 10 aces in one match.Â
Saturday's men's match was similar to Friday's, with a 3-0 win over the home team. Redeemer got out to a big lead in the first, winning 25-13, and cruised to a 25-16, 25-20 win in the final two sets. Once again, all 11 players saw time on the court for Redeemer, with Linden Bontkes putting up 10 points to lead all scorers.Â
The Royals will now turn their focus to Wednesday night when they host the Humber Hawks in their first home match of 2019. In the women's match, the Lady Royals will have their hands full with the 8-3 Hawks. Redeemer has never beaten Humber in women's volleyball.Â
The men's match will also feature a high-flying Hawks team. With a record of 10-1, the Hawks stand in Redeemer's way of capturing a top-two finish in the OCAA West division. After dropping their first match against Humber on the road back on October 25th, 3-2, Redeemer will be looking to even the score at home Wednesday night.Â
Redeemer vs. Humber gets underway at 6:00 pm and will be streamed live at RedeemerRoyals.ca/watch.
