The Redeemer Royals Women's Volleyball team hosted the 9-3 Humber Hawks Wednesday night in Ancaster. After falling 3-0 on the road at Humber in the Fall semester, the Royals were looking to change the script at home.
With the Hawks coming off of a rare loss on the weekend to the St. Clair Saints, the Royals were looking to come out strong and catch the visitors off guard. Redeemer did just that, as the Royals built an 18-12 lead, and looked poised to take the first set off of the Hawks. However, Humber slowly crept back as the set wore on, narrowing the score to just 3 points at 20-17. Having lost the momentum of the set, Redeemer was unable to recover, dropping the set 25-23.
Unfortunately for the Royals, despite playing well, they were unable to hold onto a lead for the rest of the match. Redeemer led 5-1 in the 2nd set before a 9-2 run by Humber gave the visitors the lead. The Hawks rode that lead to a 25-15 win in the 2nd.
The 3rd set followed a similar pattern to the 1st and 2nd. Redeemer jumped out to a 9-1 advantage, forcing the Hawks to take a timeout. Humber then responded with a 7-2 run out of the break to close the gap to just 3 points. The Royal would sit with a 4-point cushion for most of the 3rd and extended it to 5 points late in the set with the score at 22-17. It was not Redeemer's night however as Humber once again found a way to squeak out the set with a late run and a 25-23 win.
Abby Sluys once again paced the Royals with 10 kills in the 3 sets. Sluys now has 41 kills in her last 3 matches and 51 total points.
Jasmyn Stoffers added 7 kills Thursday night along with 6 aces and 1 block.
Julia Watson led all scorers in the match for Humber with 15 total points.
Redeemer will look to get back into the win column Saturday when they travel to St. Clair College for a tough afternoon matchup with the 10-1 Saints. For those unable to make the match in Windsor, the game can be found live online
