The Royals had a tough task put in front of them in the 2019 OCAA Women's Basketball season opener Friday night. Redeemer welcomed the top-ranked Hawks to begin the 2019-2020. Despite a solid effort from the home team, the visiting Hawks knocked off the Royals 98-69.
A difficult stretch towards the end of the first quarter, proved to be to much, for the Royals as the Hawks went on a 15-0 run. It was the largest run of the game as the Royal's hung with the visitors for much of the contest. A solid 2nd quarter saw the Royals outscored by just 3 points. The 4th quarter was equally impressive for the home team, keeping pace with the Hawks 20-18 in the final 10 minutes.
The 69 points Friday night was the most the Royals have scored against the powerhouse Hawks since 2014.
After missing most of the preseason, Redeemer's
Tobie Brinkman looked to be in fine form. The 4th year Forward finished with 22 points and 9 rebounds.
Newcomers
Jessica Angelini and
Griffin Lack-Shane were impressive in their debut, scoring 16 and 14 respectively.
Ivana Twumasi and Miea Campbell-Johnson each had 17 points for the Hawks in the win.
The Royals will now prepare for a date with their Hamilton neighbour, the Mohawk Mountaineers next Friday. The Mountaineers also opened their season on Friday night, losing to the St. Clair Saints 70-54. Redeemer will then have a quick turnaround, hosting the Conestoga Condors on Tuesday October 28th and then the Lambton Lions November 1st
