A busy slate of home games this weekend saw the Royals host 5 games in three nights at Redeemer University College in Ancaster. The weekend kicked off early on Thursday as the Royals basketball teams hosted the Niagara Knights. On a wildly entertaining night, both teams walked away with a win and a loss.
The women's basketball team gave the home crowd and inspiring effort, battling injuries, foul trouble, and the Niagara Knights. Short staffed Thursday night due to injuries, the Royals appeared to be rolling, leading 46-32 at halftime. However, first half fouls started to catch up with Redeemer in the 3rd quarter and before long the team was in foul trouble. With no healthy options available from the bench, Coach VanHouwelingen was unable to sit anyone accumulating fouls. Eventually the lack of depth caught up to the Royals, with 2 players fouling out as the 4th quarter started, forcing Redeemer to play with just 4 players. Redeemer fought valiantly till the end, playing down to just 3 players in the final minute of the game, and losing by just 3 points, 79-76.
Tobie Brinkman had 25 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in the final minute of the game, while Griffin Lack-Shane added 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists.
Redeemer will conclude their first semester play on Friday when they travel to play the St. Clair Saints in Windsor.
The Men's team used a 33 point 3rd quarter to propel themselves to a win over the Knights. After a sloppy 2nd quarter in which the Royals scored just 5 points, half time adjustments by Head Coach
Jamie Girolametto, spurred the Royals to one of their best quarters of the season. Redeemer won the match 79-71.
Armeen Fazelipour had 14 points and 10 rebounds in the win while
Spencer Kerssies had a game-high 19 points.
Kennon Larmand had a team-high 17 points for the visiting Knights.
On Saturday night, the Men's Basketball team was back in action hosting the Canadore Panthers. Canadore only has a Men's team and so the Women's team did not play.
The Royals put together an impressive 4 quarters, defeating the Panthers 110-68. Despite an 0-9 record, the Panthers have been competitive this season, losing to the Lambton Lions by just 4, the Humber Hawks by 15, and the Fanshawe Falcons by 13. Redeemer's 42 points win saw 13 different players score for the Royals.
The win for Redeemer was their 6th of the season. With 2 losses, only the top-ranked Sheridan Bruins have less (1 loss) at this point in the season.
Redeemer will close out the first semester Friday against the high-flying St. Clair Saints. The Saints entered the weekend undefeated but suffered back-to-back losses Saturday and Sunday against the Sheridan Bruins and Humber Hawks.
