MEN'S VOLLEYBALL ADVANCES TO THE OCAA PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Redeemer defeats George Brown 3-1 to qualify for the Provincial Championship

The Redeemer Royals are headed to the OCAA Provincial Men's Volleyball Championship after a 3-1 defeat over the visiting George Brown Huskies.

After dropping the first set 27-25 , the Royals rallied to win the next three, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19.

Redeemer came into the match as the third place team in the OCAA West with a record of 12-6. Their opponent, the George Brown Huskies, ranked sixth in the OCAA East with a 10-8 record.

The last meeting between the teams came in the 2018 OCAA Championship quarterfinal. The Royals knocked off the Huskies to advance to the OCAA Championship semi-finals, eventually capturing a bronze medal.

After a shaky start for the home team Saturday, the Royals found their groove in the 2nd set and never let up. After a 3-game hiatus, Redeemer's Linden Bontkes returned to action and appeared to not miss a beat. Knocking down 16 kills, Bontkes finished with 22 points, adding 4 aces and 2 blocks. Bryaden Stoffers was also stellar for the Royals, recording 11 kills, 5 aces, and 2 blocks.

With the win, the Royals have advanced to their third consecutive Championship event.

Redeemer's quarterfinal opponent was also decided Saturday as the La Cite Coyotes took care of the Sheridan Bruins in straight sets.

The Royals will open the OCAA Championship Thursday against the Coyotes at Humber College, this year's host.
