ROYALS TO PLAY FOR BRONZE AFTER SEMIFINAL HEARTBREAK

Redeemer will face Seneca Sunday for Championship Bronze

The Redeemer Royals will face the Seneca Sting on Sunday afternoon with an OCAA Bronze medal on the line. Redeemer was bounced from the Championship semifinal 79-76 by the George Brown Huskies on Saturday night.

Sunday's match will be the 2nd time in program history that Redeemer will play for an OCAA medal. Their opponent, Seneca College, lost their semifinal on Saturday evening to the Humber Hawks 78-73.

The Royals will look to capture their first medal in program history and take some of the sting out of losing to George Brown. Aside from a berth in the Championship final, the Royals also missed out on a trip to their first National Championship in the loss as the winner automatically advanced.

Saturday's semifinal was a tight, back-and-forth battle between two of the best in the Province. The matchup featured the #2 West ranked Royals, against the #1 East ranked Huskies. Redeemer came out of the gate strong, building a 10-3 lead to start the game. The Royals rode that adantage into the 2nd quarter, leading 25-19 after 10 minutes. The 2nd quarter was tight the whole way through, but the Huskies outscored Redeemer 21-17 in the quarter, trimming the lead to just 2 points heading into the halftime break, 42-40.

The 2nd half was everything you would want in a Championship semifinal with such high stakes. The match featured 7 ties and 5 lead changes, with 5 of them coming in the final quarter. The Huskies built a 4 point lead heading into the 4th quarter but it was the Royals who led for most of the final frame. An 8-0 run put Redeemer up 64-60, a lead they held until just under two minutes to play in the match. Back-to-back 3-pointers saw George Brown tie the game at 76-76. A made free throw with 34 seconds left, game the Huskies the lead at 77-76. The one free-throw proved to be enough as the Royals were unable to score again. The last second were not without drama however as Redeemer had two chances to pull the game into overtime. After a layup put the Huskies ahead by 3, Redeemer had a chance to force overtime but missed their 3-point attempt with 16 seconds to go. After an intentional foul sent George Brown to the line, a pair of missed free throws gave the Royals one more chance to extend the game, down by 3 points. However, Redeemer was unable to get a clean shot, sending George Brown ot the Gold medal match.

Jacobus Vanderpol finished with 22 points for the Royals while Spencer Kerssies added 20 and 9 rebounds. Elijah Lostracco chipped in 14 points.

The Bronze match tips off on Sunday at noon and can be watched live on OCAA.com.
