Royals men's volleyball falls to Falcons 3-2 in home opener

jenkins2ANCASTER, ON - The Redeemer University men's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to the Fanshawe Falcons in their OCAA home opener Friday night at the Redeemer Athletic Center.

Redeemer jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-16 victory in set one. Fanshawe took the next two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-23. In front of an electric crowd, the Royals answered in set four with a 25-19 win, but would come up short in the fifth and deciding set by the score of 15-13.

The Royals were led by fourth year Brett Jenkins (Peterborough, ON) who recorded a career high 24 kills kills to go along with seven digs. He finished with a .386 hitting percentage. Fifth year William Winkelhorst (Newcastle, ON) contributed with 17 kills and three blocks and a .454 hitting efficiency while Patrick Belisle added seven kills on nine attempts for a team high .773 percentage. First year setter Andrew Van Dyke registered a career best 41 assists while Libero Carsen Grim (Langley, BC) added 10 digs in the loss. 

Leading the Falcons was Alain Pineault and Jack Voght who recorded 11 and 10 kills respectively. 

For the match, Redeemer hit .368 adding 58 kills with 15 errors on 117 attempts. The Falcons collected 41 kills with 15 errors on 86 attempts for a .302 hitting percentage. The Royals also had a match high 14 serve aces.

The Royals return to action next weekend when they travel north to take on the Boreal Vipers (Nov. 28th) and Cambrian Golden Shield (Oct. 29th) in OCAA conference play.
