Royals women’s basketball downs Huskies 89-69

Debrake1Ancaster, ON - The Redeemer University Royals women's basketball team (1-0-0 overall, 0-0-0 OCAA) defeated the George Brown Huskies by the score of 89–69 in non-conference action Thursday night at home.

The Royals trailed 6-5 in the opening two minutes, before putting together a 24-8 run, leading 29-14 after one quarter. Redeemer would continue with a 27-5 run to open the second quarter and led 51-23 at the half. 

The Royals had three players in double figures led by first year Julia Staysyhn (Dundas, ON) who finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds for the double-double in her Royals debut.

Fourth year guard Jessica Angelini (Hamilton, ON) finished the night going 5-for-8 from beyond the arc, registering 20 points and eight rebounds. In her Royals hardwood debut, the two-sport athlete Talia Vreugdenhil (Frankford, ON) added 16 points and seven rebounds in 13 minutes of action.

Second year Karyn TeBrake (Ottawa, ON) chipped in with eight points, seven rebounds and six assists while first year Serena Vitello (Hamilton, ON) added eight points, five rebounds and three assists.

Leading George Brown was Jordyn Dawkins who recorded 22 points.

For the game, Redeemer shot 42.2% (35-for-83) from the field, 33.3% (5-for-15) from beyond the arc good and 48.3% (14-for-29) from the free throw line. They also outrebounded the Huskies 75-37, including 28 offensive boards.

The Royals return to action October 15th when they host the Georgian Grizzlies at 1pm.
