Royals Jenkins and Breukelman take home OCAA Awards

LONDON, ON - The Redeemer Royals men's volleyball team picked up seven awards at the 2023 OCAA Men's Volleyball Awards banquet on Wednesday night in London.
Third year outside hitter
Brett Jenkins (Peterborough, ON) had a career season capturing the OCAA West Scoring Title. He was also named an OCAA First Team All-Star and was selected as a CCAA All-Canadian.
"Brett had a great senior season for us and I couldn't be more proud of his development and overall leadership the past two seasons as a member of the Royals men's volleyball family," said Royals head coach
Eli Tolkamp. "His offense is a force to be reckoned with and a key part of our success this year. His three awards tonight are very well deserved."
In his final season at Redeemer, Jenkins started in 16 of 18 matches finishing in the top 10 in seven OCAA offensive categories
including 1st in kills (229), 1st in service aces (51), 1st in points (301), 2nd in points per set (4.01), 2nd in service aces per set (0.70), 5th in kills per set (3.14), 8th in hitting percentage (.297). Jenkins also registered 133 digs and 22 blocks. His 301 points and 51 service aces both rank second in the Royals single-season record book and his 229 kills rank third.
Jenkins registered five double-doubles on the season and had a career-high 24 kills versus Fanshawe. He also added a career-best five aces in three different matches.
First year outside hitter Derick Breukelman (Burlington, ON) had an outstanding rookie season for the Royals earning him OCAA Rookie of the Year, OCAA West Division Rookie of the Year, OCAA West All-Rookie Team and OCAA Second Team All-Star honours.
"Derick had an outstanding first season for us and continued to improve his game each match as the season went on," said Tolkamp. "He has worked hard on his game and his numbers showed as the top rookie in the OCAA. He is going to be a force and an offensive leader as he continues his university career. I am so proud of him as a member of the Royals men's volleyball family."
In his first season, Breukelman finished 3rd in the OCAA in points (252), 8th in kills (195), 10th in points per set (3.50), 11th in service aces (28), 13th in kills per set (2.57) and 15th in hitting percentage (.265). He also collected 92 digs and 30 blocks.
He recorded three double-doubles and had a career-high 20 kills in back-to-back matches versus Fanshawe and Sheridan.
