ANCASTER, ON. Redeemer Royals (5-1) women's soccer enters the week ranked in the top 15 in the country. The Royals sit in a tie for first in the West with a game at hand on the St. Clair Saints.
Wednesday evening the Royals hosted the Humber Hawks. Humber, a perennial powerhouse has been off to a slow start. However, the Hawks were riding a two-game win streak including a win over the St. Clair Saints.
The Redeemer Royals yet again got off to a quick start. Redeemer forward
Emily Walraven had an excellent scoring opportunity in the opening minutes but was turned away by the Humber netminder. The Humber Hawks record does not represent the quality of their side. The Hawks are one of few teams to hold the Royals scoreless through the first half of play.
Redeemer controlled the majority of possession through the first half. However, the score was locked at 0-0.
Second-half action kicked off and the Humber Hawks switched into second gear. The Hawks outshot the Royals 10-4 in the second half. Redeemer's rookie sensation between the pipes,
Jasmine DeBoer tallied seven saves.
As the clock ticked closer to ninety minutes, the RU Royal Family anxiously awaited the Royals to go ahead. Royals star-midfielder
Ivana Kanisek answered the call. Kansiek buried a goal in the 75th minute on a team effort play.
Joelle Mitton and
Alyssa Simpson assisted the Royals' goal.
Humber unloaded their last efforts for the remaining fifteen minutes. The Hawks had two key opportunities off of free kicks but were shut down.
The Redeemer Royals (6-1) closed out the match with a 1-0 victory. These three points give the Royals the sole spot in first place in the OCAA West.
Three matches remain for the Royals in the regular season, each against high-calibre opponents. Three wins would see the Royals clinch first place in the OCAA West for the first time in program history. With Wednesday's win, the Royals set a program record for six wins in a single season.
The first of the remaining three matches is this Saturday at Sheridan. Be sure to rally along side the history-making Royals as they close out the regular season.
