ANCASTER, ON Redeemer women's soccer (2-0-0) hosted the St. Clair Saints (1-0-1) Saturday afternoon for their home opener. The Saints and Royals last faced off in the season opener one week ago. The rematch between OCAA West favourites did not disappoint.
The Royals brought the energy early in the match feeding off of the RU Royal Family, which packed the stands. Redeemer got on the board first scoring off of a free kick. Royals captain
Leah Sloots crossed the ball into the box where
Grace Devries volleyed it past the keeper. A beauty that had the fans on their feet.
Redeemer maintained the pressure and put together two more quality scoring opportunities. The Saints marched into the Royals' end and delivered an excellent chance but were stopped by Royals keeper
Jasmine DeBoer.
St. Clair rallied again and evened the score at one all in the thirty-sixth minute.
Halftime saw the score tied one to one.
Royals keeper
Jasmine DeBoer had the Royals fans up and loud several times through the second half. DeBoer played a sensational match and delivered countless game-changing saves. The rookie keeper continues to turn heads around the league.
The St. Clair offense was finally able to squeak another ball past the Royals on a free kick from just outside the box. The Saints took the lead in the sixty-fifth minute and did not look back.
Redeemer fought in the Saints side for the remainder of the match but could not crack their defensive line. St.Clair held off the Royals to equal the score in the season match-up.
Redeemer is back on the road this week as they travel to Lambton College in the battle of the Lions. Kick-off in Sarnia is set for Saturday, September 21 at 4:00 PM.
