ANCASTER, ON. The Royals women's basketball team hosted the Humber Hawks on Senior Night. Though the game ended in a 78-48 loss, it was a chance for the team, coaches, and fans to honour three incredible seniors—
Sydney Drain,
Mia Palango, and
Hannah Bloemberg—who have left an indelible mark on the program.
The game itself started off as a tight contest. After a back-and-forth first quarter, both teams were tied at 16-16, showing the intensity and focus from Redeemer early on. However, the Hawks started to find their rhythm in the second quarter, and despite the Royals' best efforts, they went into halftime down 40-30.
Redeemer had a tough time matching the Hawks' energy in the second half. The third quarter proved to be the turning point, with the Royals being outscored 24-6. That stretch put the game out of reach, and by the fourth quarter, the Hawks had built a commanding lead. The Royals fought until the very end, but couldn't close the gap, falling 78-48.
Mia Palango was a bright spot for Redeemer, showing leadership and poise on both ends of the floor. The senior forward finished with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals, demonstrating her all-around game.
Talia Vreugdenhil also had a strong showing, leading the team with 9 rebounds.
The team now shifts focus to the remainder of the season. The Royals next game is Wednesday, February 5th as they visit the Niagara Knights. The Royals eagerly await the final OCAA standings to determine their first-round playoff match-up.
