ANCASTER, ON. Redeemer Men's Basketball (3-7) opened the second semester with a must-win match against the Fanshawe Falcons (2-8). The semester opening match carries significant postseason implications for the two sides. Points in the OCAA West are hard to come by and teams need to capitalize on their opportunities to climb the standings.
Redeemer started the match off quickly, scoring on back-to-back trips up the court. The Royals jumped to an early 12-4 lead, however, the Falcons settled into the match and finished the first quarter tied at 20-all.Â
Second-quarter action continued in a tightly contested match. The Falcons quickly established a lead that grew to a nine-point advantage halfway through the quarter. At the half, Fanshawe led the Royals 40-35.
The Falcons continued their offensive pressure in the second half and quickly grew their lead. Fanshawe controlled a twelve-point lead less than halfway through the third quarter.
The Royals rallied in the final quarter and kick-started a 16-2 run to bring the game within one. The Falcon's only answer was to call a timeout with five minutes remaining. Following the timeout, both sides were held scoreless for two minutes. Thomas Barbosa tied the game at 67 with two shots from the foul line.Â
As the clocked ticked down the Royals trailed by one point. Five seconds on the clock and Redeemer had an inbound in the offensive end. The Royals skipped the pass to Parker Davis who was smothered by the Falcons defender. Davis was unable to get the shot off and Fanshawe secured the one-point win.
