VAUGHAN, ON - Wednesday evening, Redeemer men's soccer visited the number one-ranked team in the country, the Humber Hawks. Entering the midweek clash, the Royals desperately sought a win as the postseason draws near. Redeemer currently finds themselves in the lower half of the table. Despite the lower seeding, Redeemer can climb the rankings in a closely contested division.
Redeemer opened the match strongly, controlling possession through the opening ten minutes. The Hawks found their pace and began to present an offensive threat.
Redeemer possessed the first high-danger scoring opportunity as
Georgiy Gavalov drilled a shot off the post in the twenty-second minute.
The near Royals goal startled the Hawks who quickly rallied to answer. Humber found four goals (27',29',35',45') to spark a 4-nil lead into halftime.
Humber added one more to their lead early in the second half.
Royals forward
Ethan Smith beat the Humber keeper in the 75' minute. Smith's goal was only the third that the Humber side has conceded this season.
Redeemer dropped Wednesday's match 5-1 to the number one-ranked team in the country.
The Reds are back in action this Saturday at David Mantel Field. Saturday action has a full slate, including a Royals alumni match, followed by Redeemer Men's and Women's soccer facing the Niagara Knights.
