KISSIMMEE, FL - Redeemer University women's soccer wrapped up their NCCAA National Championships run with a strong performance on Thursday, defeating Wayland Baptist 4–2 in their final match of the tournament.
Both teams entered the game already eliminated from advancing, but Redeemer came out looking to finish on a positive note, even if the opening minutes didn't cooperate. Wayland Baptist struck early, converting in the 7th minute to take a 1–0 lead.
From there, Redeemer began to settle in and push back. In the 27th minute, the Royals broke through for their first goal of the tournament when
Joelle Mitton scored off a pass from
Tautiana Pellegrino. Just four minutes later, Redeemer earned a penalty, and Grace DeVries stepped up and buried it in the 31st minute to put the Royals ahead 2–1 at halftime.
Redeemer carried that momentum into the second half. Four minutes after the restart, Mitton added her second of the game, finishing a feed from
Alia Breukelman to extend the lead to 3–1.
Wayland Baptist responded with a goal midway through the half, but Redeemer closed the door shortly after. In the 70th minute,
Hannah Moes scored the Royals' fourth of the afternoon, with Mitton providing the assist.
Mitton finished the match with five points, two goals and an assist, as Redeemer secured their first win at the NCCAA National Championships, a result the program has been within reach of in past seasons but had yet to claim.
