SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - The Redeemer Royals women's volleyball team picked up an important road win on Friday night, defeating the Sault Cougars in four sets in Sault Ste. Marie. The matchup marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs, as Sault College joins the OCAA this season.
Entering the contest, Redeemer was looking to secure its second straight win of the semester and continue its push toward the top half of the conference standings. Despite Sault's 0–8 record, the Cougars have been competitive in every match this season, and they showed that resilience early.
After a long journey north to Sault College, the Royals dropped the opening set as the Cougars played efficiently and proved they could go toe-to-toe with an established OCAA program. Rather than letting the slow start linger, Redeemer responded with poise and control, rebounding to take the next three sets in convincing fashion.
Redeemer's efficiency was the difference, as the Royals hit an impressive .402 on the night while also adding seven team blocks. The balanced and disciplined performance allowed Redeemer to steadily pull away as the match went on.
Setter Alana DeJong had a standout performance, recording 47 assists and 12 digs. The junior setter has been phenomenal all season and continues to be a key component of the Royals' success. Her 47 assists set a new program record for most assists in a single match.
Avery Surette also had a strong all-around night for Redeemer, leading the team with 14 digs while adding 13 points offensively.
With the win, Redeemer improves to 7–3 on the season and keeps momentum rolling as the schedule tightens. The Royals will face the Cougars again tomorrow afternoon to complete the doubleheader in Sault Ste. Marie.
