Howard Nañes

On March 27, 2026 Director of Athletics and Recreation James Kryger announced Howard Nañes as the Head Coach of Redeemer Royals Men’s Basketball team, the 8th head coach in program history, and a new era of purpose and performance.

Nañes is a FIBA licensed, NCCP Train to Compete (Level 3) certified coach who brings over two decades of experience as a coach, referee, educator, and ministry leader. Known for his commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court, Nañes leads a philosophy centered on discipline, accountability, and Christ-centered character formation.

Prior to joining Redeemer, Nañes served as Head Coach of the Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) where he led the Men’s program to a 41-16 record, captured four Ontario Tournament Championships, and was awarded the UTM Coach of the Year in 2022-23 and 2025-26.

In addition to his coaching accomplishments, Nañes has a strong academic and theological background. He is an Ontario certified high school teacher, holds a Bachelor of Arts Double Major in Psychology and Religious Studies from York University and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto, along with a Master of Divinity from McMaster University. His unique blend of education and ministry experience shape the transformational culture he brings to every program he builds.

At Redeemer, Nañes is committed to building a competitive and high character program that aligns with the university’s mission and values. His vision focuses on recruiting and developing student-athletes with a growth mindset who strive for excellence in competition while growing in character and faith.

An example of servant leadership, Nañes’ impact extends beyond the court. He has been recognized by the Coaches Association of Ontario in their “Empowering Stories from Behind the Bench” series, highlighting his role as a mentor and “guiding force” in his community.

Nañes currently resides in Mississauga, Ontario where he teaches Religious Education and Health and Physical Education while supporting high school athletics by refereeing and mentoring new coaches. He enjoys spending time and making memories with the loves of his life: his wife Gail, son Hosea, and daughter Halle.
