A disappointing season came to an end last night for the Royals as the teams packed up there bags for one last trip and headed to Welland to play the Niagara Knights in Redeemer's final games of the season. Both teams put in a strong effort to finish off the 2012 campaign despite the games not having an impact in the standings.
In the women's game, both teams entered halftime tied 0-0 before exchanging goals in the 2nd half. Niagara scored in the 71st minute and Redeemer's April Passchier equalized in the 81st off of a free kick. 1-1 was the final score. On the men's side, Niagara jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half. The Royals battled back in the second and closed the gap to 2-1 when Redeemer's Eric Miedema got the men on the board in the 60th minute. However, the Royals couldn't find the equalizer as the team fell by that 2-1 score.
As the season ends, neither team qualified for post-season action as both teams were outside the top six in the division that make it to the first round of qualifying games for the Championships.
The men's team finished the season without a win and a record of 0-8-0. The last time the men's team finished without a win was in 2002-2003 when the team went 0-10-2. The last time the team went without a point was in 1999-2000 when the team went 0-10-0.
While the women's team were able to remain competitive in most of there matches, they were also unable to pick up a win in the 2012 season with a record of 0-5-3. The last time the Lady Royals went winless in a season was in 2005-2006 when the team went 0-6-2.
Both men's and women's teams will put the outdoor season behind them and turn their focus to a very important off-season filled with technical development and conditioning. The teams will be preparing themselves for the indoor season that begins in January. The teams will enjoy the benefits of a new soccer facility that allows for full year training. The programs will also be focused on recruiting, as the teams will look to continue to develop and strengthen under the new coaching staff.
The Royals soccer teams would like to thank the many fans that came out to support them during the season!
