Saturday was not kind to the Royals soccer teams. For two teams that have been fighting for every point, Saturday's games took the struggle to the extreme. A goal in the 93rd minute of the women's game and 89th minute of the men's game kept points from both Royals teams.
In the Women's game, both teams struggled for offensive opportunities while each teams defense stood strong. The Lady Royals were once again unable to create and finish quality scoring chances. Redeemer seemed to be heading for their second tie of the weekend and 1 point but Ashley Hagen found the back of the net for Mohawk in the 93rd minute. Mohawk moves their record to 2-2 while Redeemer's falls to 0-3-2.
The Men's game was equally even with the final 20 minutes ending in thrilling fashion. The Royals were able to get out to an early lead when
Dirk Van Soelen (Georgetown, Ontario) scored in the 21st minute for Redeemer. That scoreline held until the 72nd minute when Matthew Kernick equalized for the Mountaineers. Another quick strike by Mohawk 2 minutes later had the Mountaineers up 2-1 and put the Royals on their heels. However, the game seemed destined for a tie when
Zander Jacobs (Caledon, ON) equalized in the 85th minute. Unfortunately for the Royals, heartbreak was the theme of the day as Colin Dougan put Mohawk up for good in the 89th minute giving them the 3-2 win. Mohawk's record now improves to 3-1 while Redeemer's fall to 0-5.
On Friday night, the Lady Royals were able to secure a 0-0 tie against the Conestoga Condors. The Royals were strong defensively and
Grace Berkel (Simcoe, ON) had the shutout for Redeemer. The Men's team gave up 3 second half goals in the 65th, 72nd, and 89th minute in a 3-0 loss to Conestoga.
The Royals will finish up their home schedule on Wednesday as they host the Humber Hawks. The women's team comes to Redeemer with a 4-0 record while the men's team sits at 3-1. Game time is at 4pm and 6pm.
