The resolution for the New Year for the Redeemer Royals basketball teams might just be to play a tough full four quarters. Despite some strong play last night in Brampton from the Royals, both Redeemer teams fell to the Sheridan Bruins as a result of poor starts to the second half.
Despite being down only 6 points at the half and outscoring the Bruins in the 2nd quarter, the Royals could only muster up 4 points in the 3rd quarter compared to Sheridan's 20. The hole was to deep to climb out of as Redeemer went on to lose 68-37.
The Royals had circled this game on their calendar for a number of reasons including it being their first game back from the break but also because they had beaten Sheridan earlier in the season at home in one of the biggest upsets in recent history for Redeemer.
After the first half it looked like the Royals had done enough to put them in position to take a run at Sheridan but a disastrous 3rd quarter gave the Bruins the revenge they were likely looking for. Redeemer shot just 7.7% in the second half after shooting 31.3% in the first half.
Jesseca Brown and Morissa Lychak had team-high totals of 16 points. Lychak also added 15 rebounds for the double-double.
Haeven Durrant had a game-high 19 points in the win for Sheridan.
In the men's game, the Royals found themselves down a manageable 11 points at the half before allowing a disappointing 28 points in the 3rd quarter. Sheridan came into the game with a 9-1 record in the OCAA and ranked as the #3 team in Canada.
The Royals knew it would be a tough battle coming in and played well throughout the game. Redeemer did pull the contest back substantially in the 4th quarter when they scored 27 points to the Bruins 16 however the lead was to much as Redeemer fell 73-60.
Three Royals had double-doubles in the match. Benn Ibrahim had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Calvin Turnbull had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Chris McFadden-Martin had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Trevor Williams had a game-high 18 points for Sheridan.
The Men's team is back in action this Saturday evening at 6pm as they look for the season sweep against the Canadore Panthers. The Women's team is off this weekend as they prepare for Algoma University and Sault College on January 18th and 19th at home.
