It was quite the atmosphere at Redeemer University College on Friday night as the Royals Volleyball teams played their home openers in front of a packed house. The electric atmosphere spurred the home crowd to a strong start in both games but the talented teams from Humber were able to steal both wins.
Halfway through the women's match there was not a seat left in Redeemer's gymnasium as the crowd had been anticipating the home openers for weeks.
Both teams fed off of the energy of the crowd early on but the Hawks were able to adjust to the noise and eventually find a way to win.
In the women's match, the Lady Royals showed flashes of brilliance but also showed some areas of weakness. Redeemer had the Hawks stunned in the first set as Redeemer cruised to a 25-19 win over the defending OCAA Champs.
The Royals continued to show signs of an improved team from 2012/13 and had an opportunity to take full control of the game but a large run by the Hawks to end the 2nd gave Humber the 25-20 win.
From there, the Royals were really unable to gain control of the match again. Redeemer struggled to serve and made a number of hitting errors opening the door for Humber. The Hawks capitalized, showing their strong form, taking the 3rd and 4th sets for the 3-1 win.
With the loss, Redeemer moves to 1-1 on the season.
The Men's match unfolded in similar fashion to the Women's match. The Royals started strong and fed of the energy of the crowd going point for point with the Hawks. Neither team was able to put together a number of points in sequence until late in the game when Humber pulled away and took the first game 25-21.
The second game opened with Humber in full control as Redeemer was unable to contain Humber's strong serve. The Royals uncharacteristically struggled in their passing game as Humber won big in the 2nd set 25-13.
In the 3rd, Redeemer looked to get back into the match. The game took on the tone of the 1st set as both teams exchanged points throughout. Again, Humber eventually was able to find an edge as they took the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
With the loss, the Men's team falls to 1-1 for the 2013/14 season.
Both Redeemer teams will have a quick turnaround as they face the Sheridan Bruins at home on Wednesday, November 6th.
