The Lady Royals Volleyball team kept their hot streak going tonight as they defeated the Sheridan Bruins 3-0 on the road in Oakville. With the win, Redeemer clinched 4th place and a spot in the OCAA playoffs. The Royals will host the Algonquin Thunder on Saturday at 7:00pm. The winner will advance to the Provincial Championships.
The women's team entered the match on a high after taking one of the top teams in Canada (Humber College) to 5 games a week ago, and than sweeping the Mohawk Mountaineers this past Saturday 3-0. The Royals were searching for one more win which would catapult them into 4th place and ahead of both Sheridan College and Niagara College.
Despite some nerves and some shaky play, the Royals extended their season by at least one game with the sweep of Sheridan. Game scores were 25-17, 25-22, and 25-22. In a complete team effort, including 8 blocks, 7 aces from
April Passchier (Kitchener, ON), and 14 kills from
Curtiss Straatsma (Brampton, ON), the Royals dominated from beginning to end. Redeemer has now won 6 straight sets.
As a result of a 4th place finish, Redeemer won the ability to host their crossover match. The top two teams in the East and West division automatically qualify for the Provincial Championships, while the 3rd and 4th place team in the East and West hosts the 5th and 6th place team from the opposite division. The 4 winners of the crossover matches join the 4 teams that automatically qualified to round out a Final 8 Provincial Championships.
The Lady Royals will have their work cut out for them on Saturday night as they host the Algonquin Thunder. The Thunder comes into the match with a 12-8 record having won 3 out of their last 4 matches. The good news for Redeemer is that the Thunder have struggled on the road this season with a 5-5 away record compared to a 7-3 record at home. Game time is 7:00pm
