The Redeemer Royals Men's Soccer team took a crucial step in their path to the OCAA Men's Soccer Championship last night in the teams' home finale. The Royals defeated the Conestoga Condors 2-0 in front of their home fans on a cool and rainy evening. With the win, Redeemer sweeps the 2 game season series with the Condors and improves their record to 4-4.
Josh Elgeti opened up the scoring for the home side in the 11th minute, grabbing his 3rd goal of the season. The Royals struck again before the half when
Eric Lewis found the back of the net for his 2nd of the season in the 43rd minute.
With 2 games remaining, Redeemer has moved in sole possession of 3rd place in the OCAA West. However, the Royals have played 8 matches while all other teams, except for Conestoga, have played 7. The Royals need a top 4 finish in their division to qualify for a one game crossover, winner take all match with a spot in the Final 8 Championship on the line.Â
Redeemer will need a strong week of preparation before moving on with their remaining schedule. St. Clair will be the first test this weekend as the men's soccer team hits the road to Windsor. St. Clair dominated Redeemer the first time around this season, winning 4-0 on the Royals home turf. St. Clair sits 1 point ahead of Redeemer with a 4-2-1 record.Â
The Lady Royals were looking for their first win of the season against the 2-5 Condors in their home finale. Despite a strong effort from the red and white, Redeemer could only find the back of the net once. Conestoga netted 4 goals, two of them coming a minute apart late in the second half.Â
Marcella Zeldenrijk had the goal for the Lady Royals, her first of the season. Tanya Couperus was strong in the net for the Royals despite the 4 goals against. Couperus faced 16 shots from the visitor.Â
Like the men, the women's team has 2 games remaining in their season. Eliminated from playoff contention, the Royals will be focusing on improving their results from the last time Redeemer faced their opponents.Â
Saturday, the Royals will look to bounce back from a 3-0 loss against the St. Clair Saints earlier in the season. Saturday's match times are 1pm and 3pm.Â
