1,228 and counting......Redeemer Women's Volleyball player
Curtiss Straatsma is on the cusp of yet another historic milestone in her post-secondary volleyball career. Holder of the all-time Redeemer career points record and kills record, Straatsma is now flirting with something much bigger. Heading into the second semester, Curtiss sits just 12 points away from breaking the all-time OCAA career scoring record.
To put the milestone into perspective, Straatsma has a full semester to add to her totals and yet has already passed Humber College's Landis Doyle (1,120) and Kelly Nyhof (1,186) who previously sat #2 and #3 on the list. Both Doyle and Nyhof were CCAA All-Canadians and OCAA Athletes of the Year during their playing careers.
Straatsma is chasing Cambrian College's Shawna Metcalf. Metcalf is the last volleyball great that Curtiss needs to hurdle in order to stand alone at the top. Cambrian's Metcalf was a 3-time CCAA All-Canadian.
Curtiss will get her first shot at the record this coming Saturday when the volleyball teams travel to St. Clair College for their first match of 2016. She is currently averaging 3.8 point per set. Curtiss will get another chance at the record next Tuesday if needed when Redeemer travels to Kitchener to battle the Conestoga Condors. The women's volleyball team returns home for their January 22nd match and if Straatsma holds the record by that match, there will be a presentation to her at that time to honor her accomplishment. Fittingly, the opponent that evening will be Metcalf's former team, as Redeemer will welcome the Cambrian Golden Shield to Ancaster.
Redeemer Men's Volleyball player alumni Ryan Talsma is the only other Royal to hold an OCAA career points record. His 907 points when he graduated in 2010 launched him to the top of the leader board. Since then, Talsma has been knocked out of the top 5 but Redeemer alumni Eric Heidbuurt currently sits in 4th all-time with 980 career points.
Once Curtiss has propelled herself to the top of the all-time OCAA career point record, she will then set her sights on the all-time OCAA career kills record. The record is currently also held by Metcalf with 960. Straatsma sits 54 kills away and will need to average 6 kills per match down the stretch over her last 9 games in order to break it. Curtiss is averaging 2.6 kills per set.
