A pair of goals for the men's soccer team lifted the Royals to a win in their season opener on Saturday afternoon in Ancaster. Redeemer netted a goal in the first half and the second half en route to a 2-1 victory over the St. Clair Saints.
After some early presure from the Saints to start the match, the Royals opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Redeemer's
Jonathan Pereboom fooled St. Clair's goalkeeper, Shane Beaton, with a free kick that dipped right under the bar.
Despite 15 first half shot attempts from St. Clair, the score remained the same until midway through the 2nd half.
Jeremy Petrusma buried a shot from the top of the 18 yard box as a string of great paces by Redeemer left him unmarked.
The Saints pulled one goal back in the 88th and had a number of chances for the equalizer, but Redeemer's goalkeeper
Wayne Otten was outstanding, helping to hold off the late surge from the visiting Saints.
Redeemer will look for win number two of the season on Wednesday night when they host last year's division winner, Fanshawe College at 7:00pm.
