For the fifth consecutive year, Redeemer's men's soccer team will play in an OCAA playoff match. On Saturday, Redeemer travels to Esther Shiner Stadium for a winner-take-all match-up against the George Brown Huskies. The game gets underway at 8:15pm.
The Royals enter the match with a strong understanding of what to expect in an OCAAÂ Playoff match. Having made the playoffs each of the past 5 seasons, Redeemer has the experience to compete at the next level. The Royals will also lean heavily on their 2016 campaign in which they finished 5th at the OCAAÂ Championship with a 2-1 record.Â
The last meeting between the two teams was also in 2016 when George Brown defeated Redeemer in the quarterfinals on the OCAAÂ Championship 2-1. The Huskies went on to win the OCAAÂ bronze medal.Â
This season, the Royals finished with a 4-4-2 record, good enough for 4th place in the OCAAÂ West Division. George Brown finished 2nd in the Central Division with a record of 6-3-1.Â
Saturday's match will feature one of the leagues most potent offenses and one of the league's stingiest defenses. Redeemer enters the match having conceded just 2 goals in the last 5 games of the season, tallying a record of 3-1-1. On the flip side, the Huskies have scored 14 goals in the previous 5 league matches going 3-2 in the process.Â
George Brown is led offensively by Filipe Vilela who has scored 10 goals in the 8 league games. Redeemer counters with a strong defensive unit that includes veteran
Daniel Grootenboer and recently named CCAA Athlete of the Week, goalkeeper
Noah Bouius.Â
The winner of the crossover playoff match will advance to the OCAAÂ Provincial Championship hosted by Fleming College in Peterborough on October 26th-28th, 2017.Â
