Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

ROYALS SUFFER PAIR OF LOSSES ON THE ROAD TO THE HAWKS

Humber outlasts Royals as Redeemer succumbs to top-ranked Hawks

Always a highly anticipated match on the varsity schedule, Redeemer traveled to Humber College on Wednesday night for a pair of mid-season basketball games. Redeemer dropped both matches to the Hawks, falling 82-44 in the women's match and 92-87 in the men's game.

The Redeemer Royals have never defeated the Humber Hawks in Women's Basketball and the task Wednesday night was made more difficult with Redeemer's Tobie Brinkman out of the lineup. Down their leading scorer, the Royals put some pressure on the Hawks early, but couldn't sustain it through the match as the Hawks built a sizable lead going into halftime, and rode it to the end of the match.

Mikayla Blackburn had a team-high 15 points for the visitors while Julia Pavlik added 8 points and 9 rebounds. Pavlik also had 6 assists.

The Men's match pitted two of the hottest teams in the Province against each other. Redeemer, winners of their last 5 matches, and Humber, undefeated on the season (7-0), battled it out from the opening whistle to the final seconds.

Redeemer came out early, establishing a 12-5 lead, before the Hawks went on a run to end the quarter leading 30-20. After a fairly even 2nd quarter, Redeemer came all the way back in the 3rd, scoring 29 points, and leading by 1 going into the 4th quarter. From there, the game was back and forth for the final 10 minutes. The game remained within 3 points for the majority of the quarter, before the Hawks opened their lead up late, extended the lead to 9 points with 3 minutes remaining. Redeemer pulled it back to within 3 points with just over a minute to play before a pair of free throws for the Hawks pushed it to 5 points.

Foster Brown led the Royals with a game high 21 points. Spencer Kerssies added 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Both Women's and Men's teams are now off until Tuesday when they make the short trip to Mohawk College for a mid-week battle against the Mountaineers. Tip off for the doubleheader is 6:00pm.
