WEEKEND RECAP: ROYALS SPLIT HOME AND AWAY WITH SAINTS ON SNOWY SATURDAY

Royals battle winter storm and Saints, taking 2 of 4 from St. Clair

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 The Redeemer Royals Volleyball and Basketball teams withstood winter storm like conditions on Saturday to play a pair of critical matches against the St. Clair Saints. The Royals Volleyball teams made the snowy trip to Windsor while the Saints Basketball teams traveled to Ancaster. Both institutions split, with the Redeemer Men's programs knocking off both Saints teams and the Saints Women's programs defeating both Redeemer's teams.

After a long snowy road trip, the Royals set out to face the country's #11 ranked women's volleyball team. The Saints entered the match with a 10-1 record, while the Royals sat at 5-7.

Despite having played some of their best volleyball of the season the last few weeks, the Royals struggled in Saturday's matchup, failing to generate offense. Alena Reenders led Redeemer with 8 total points, while three Saints were able to score double-digit points.

Set scores were 25-22, 25-14, 25-17. The Saints took both head-to-head matches this season against Redeemer 3-0.

While Saturday's match was a setback for the Royals, Redeemer still sits in a great position for a playoff crossover match. With the top 8 securing a playoff spot in the OCAA West, the Royals find themselves sitting in 6th. The Royals have 5 league games remaining this season starting with a Hamilton showdown Friday night at Mohawk College against the 9-4 Mountaineers. First-serve is set for 6:00 pm.

After a tough loss Wednesday to the Humber Hawks, the Royals were looking to get back in the win column Saturday afternoon. Winners of 5 of their last 6, the Royals improved their record to 9-4 with a dominating win over the Saints.

The Royals came out flying, building an 8-0 lead. Redeemer kept pushing throughout the set, keeping the Saints under 10 points, winning 25-9. The second was much tighter for Redeemer, as the Saints led for the first half of the set. The Royals finally took the lead at 17-16 and never gave it up winning 25-21.

The third set went the distance, with both teams exchanging blows. After the Saints built a 24-22 lead, Redeemer was able to stave off 5 set points before Noah Bouius finally ended the match with a thunderous stuff block. The final score was 32-30.

Redeemer's William Winkelhorst was spectacular Saturday, leading both teams with 16 total points. Reuben Middel added 10 kills on 20 attempts, while Jason Wildeboer and Daniel Wolfert shared setting duties, totaling 15 and 13 assists each.

The Royals will hit the road Friday in a key matchup with Hamilton rival, Mohawk. Mohawk currently sits 2 wins behind Redeemer and have won 2 in a row. Game time is 8:00 pm.

After picking up back-to-back wins heading into the Christmas Break, the Royals entered Saturday's match against the Saints still looking for their first win of 2019. Despite holding a lead heading into the 4th quarter, the Royals couldn't hold off the surging visitors, and dropped their 3rd straight 63-56.

Leading after each of the first 3 quarters, the Royals appeared to run out of energy in the 4th. Playing shorthanded, the Royals couldn't match the depth of the Saints, getting outscored 18-9 in the final 10 minutes.

3 Royals finished the game in double-figures. Julia Pavlik led Redeemer with 17 points and 5 steals. Tobie Brinkman had another monster game for the Royals with 16 points and 20 rebounds. First-year Lucy Brinkman had her best game of the season, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Next up, the Royals will host the Mohawk Mountaineers Thursday night. After a convincing 78-51 win on December 4th at Mohawk, the Redeemer Women's Basketball team will be looking to sweep the season series in Ancaster. With a win, the Royals would keep their playoff hopes alive and stay ahead of their Hamilton neighbor in the standings.

The Royals Men's Basketball team halted a 2-game slide Saturday afternoon with a dominating win over the Saints at home. Hitting the century mark for the third time this season, the Royals knocked off St. Clair 101-72.

After a par of tough losses to Niagara (89-85) and Fanshawe (89-76), the Royals rebounded Saturday, for their 9th win of the season. A big first quarter that saw the Royals outscore the Saints 26-10, set the tone for the match in which Redeemer never trailed. The Royals shot 53.3% from the field.

All 5 of Redeemer's starters finished with double-digit points with Spencer Kerssies leading the way with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Foster Brown almost finished with a triple-double, scoring 14 points and adding 17 rebounds and 8 assists.

The Royals will go for two wins in a row and their 10th of the season on Thursday night when they host the Mohawk Mountaineers at 8:00pm. Redeemer took game one of the season series 93-85 at Mohawk on December 4th.
