Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CHAMPIONSHIP HOSTING, A SPLIT WITH MOHAWK, AND CROSS COUNTRY PROVINCIALS HIGHLIGHT BUSY WEEKEND

Weekend Recap

It was one of the busiest weekend's of the Fall for the Redeemer Royals. With the Cross Country and Soccer seasons wrapping up and the Basketball and Volleyball seasons getting underway, there was lots of action across the OCAA for Redeemer. Here is a recap of the busy varsity weekend. 
  
Redeemer University College was the host of the 2019 OCAA Women's Soccer Championship this past weekend. The 4-day event, ran from October 23rd to October 26th and included 8 Championship matches as well as the OCAA Women's Soccer Awards Banquet. 

The Redeemer Royals lost their quarterfinal match to the eventual Silver medalist, Seneca Sting. The Royals put forth a tough, gritty effort in the Championship Quarterfinal, but ultimately fell short 4-0. Redeemer held the undefeated Sting scoreless through the first half but conceded 4 goals in the final 45 minutes. With the loss, the Royals were knocked out of the Championship while the Seneca Sting moved on to face Humber in the Championship semifinals. 

The Fanshawe Falcons walked away with it's second consecutive title, defeating the Seneca Sting 2-0 in the Final.

The Redeemer Cross Country team wrapped up their season with a strong performance at the OCAA Provincial Championships. The Championship event was hosted by St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario. 

Michelle Wright was the top runner for Redeemer in the 6K Women's race. Wright covered the course in 26:49.9 and in 40th overall place. 

Bethany Hiemstra finished in 53rd place with a time of 29:47.4. 

On the Men's side, James Scott was first across the line for Redeemer. Scott placed 33rd with a time of 29:00.2. 

Along with James, Redeemer's next three runners, Daniel Grootenboer (53rd) with a time of 30:42.0, Pieter Frielink (55th) with a time of 31:01.6, and Jordan Pauls (56th) with a time of 31:01.7 rounded out the rest of Redeemer's team scoring. Micah Westerveld completed the course in 31:53.0 and in 64th, as Redeemer's 5th runner.  

Redeemer finished 11th out of 16 teams in the overall team scoring.

Heading inside, it was rivalry weekend for Redeemer's court sports. Both Redeemer's Basketball and Volleyball teams made the short trip to Mohawk College for 4 games Friday and Saturday. 

After opening the season against the Humber Hawks October 18th, the Royals hit the road for their first away matches of the season. 

Just 8 points separated the teams as the Royals and Mountaineers split the Friday night matchup.

Redeemer's Women's team feel 84-81 while the Men's team won 93-88. 

Tobie Brinkman had a team-high 28 points in the loss and added 7 rebounds. Jessica Angelini continued here strong start to the season as well with 20 points. 

The Redeemer Men's team went to 2-0 on the season with a tight win against Mohawk. Spencer Kerssies and Nick Green had a team high 18 points in the win. 

Redeemer's Volleyball team's opened their season on Saturday, also at Mohawk, with the result similar to the Basketball scores.

Redeemer's Women's Volleyball team dropped their opener 3-0 while the Men's team won 3-1. 

In the Women's match, Abby Sluys and Jasmyn Stoffers each had double-digit points with 13 and 10 respectively. 

In the Men's game, Brayden Stoffers was exceptional for Redeemer, with 25 total points. William Winkelhorst had double-digit points as well at 14. 
 
The Royals have a busy week ahead with 6 home matches over 4 days and 2 road matches. 

The action gets underway Tuesday night when Redeemer's Basketball teams host the Conestoga Condors. Game time is at 6pm and 8pm. 

On Wednesday, the Volleyball teams have their home openers and welcome the Fanshawe Falcons for matches at 6pm and 8pm. 

Friday night, Redeemer's Basketball teams are back in action hosting the Lambton Lions at 6pm and 8pm. 

Finally, on Saturday, Redeemer's Volleyball teams hit the road to St. Clair for games at 2pm and 4pm.
