MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYOFF PREVIEW

Men's Basketball aiming for 4th straight Championship appearance

The Redeemer Royals Men's Basketball team has their sights set on the programs first OCAA medal as the road to the 2019-2020 Championship gets underway this week. The Royals will host the Centennial Colts on Saturday night with the winner advancing to the OCAA Championship event. 

The 2019-2020 OCAA Championships will be in Sarnia, Ontario, hosted by Lambton College March 6th-8th. 

The Royals finished up their regular season on Saturday with a narrow loss to the high flying St. Clair Saints. A win for the Royals would have secured the OCAA West Division title. Instead, Redeemer finishes tied for 1st in the OCAA with the Humber Hawks at 15-5. The Hawks win the tie-break, bumping the Royals down to the #2 spot in the West. That sets up a home playoff matchup with the Centennial Colts Saturday. The Colts finished the season with a 10-10 record, and in 6th place in the OCAA East. The Royals enter the match with a 9-2 record at home while the Colts counter with their 2-8 road record. 

If the Royals advance to the 2019-2020 Championship, it will be their 4th consecutive appearance. The Royals are hoping their league success translates into Championship success. Redeemer has fallen out of the Championship medals in the past 3 years, finishing 5th, 4th, and 5th/6th respectively. This years Redeemer Royals team however is arguably one of the deepest teams ever for the program.

The Royals are led by balanced scoring and dedicated defense. Redeemer will throw the 2x reigning West Defensive player of the Year, Foster Brown at the Colts, along with 4 top scoring threats all averaging double-digit points this season. Spencer Kerssies (16.7 PPG), Jacobus Vanderpol (14.1 PPG), Elijah Lostracco (13.4 PPG), and Nick Green (10.7 PPG) lead the way offensively for Redeemer. 

A crossover win on Saturday would mean a quarterfinal matchup against the winner of the crossover playoff game between #5 West ranked Sheridan Bruins and #3 East ranked Loyalist Lancers.
