ROYALS BOUNCED FROM PLAYOFFS WITH QUARTERFINAL LOSS TO #1 LORDS

Redeemer falls in straight sets to Durham as 2019-2020 season comes to a close

The Redeemer Royals chance at their 3rd consecutive OCAA medal came to an end on Thursday afternoon at the 2019-2020 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championships. Redeemer dropped their Quarterfinal match to the #1 East ranked Durham Lords in straight sets.

Set scores were 25-13, 25-17, 25-23.

Redeemer entered the match as the #4 ranked team from the West division, qualifying for the Championships after a 3-2 victory over Algonquin College. The #6 Nationally ranked Lords advanced to Thursday's game following a 3-0 win against Mohawk College in their qualifying match.

Overall, it was a disappointing match from the Royals who struggled in almost every area of the game. An uncharacteristic amount of errors for the 11-7 Royals allowed the Lords to play pressure-free throughout the match. Redeemer struggled at the service line, committing 21 service errors and added 11 hitting errors. A strong defensive effort by Durham didn't help the Royals chances as the Lords had 40 digs to Redeemer's 17.

1st Team All-Star Brayden Stoffers led Redeemer in the match with 14 Kills and was named the OCAA player of the game for the Royals.

With the loss, Redeemer is eliminated from the OCAA playoffs while the Durham Lords advance to Friday's Semifinal match.

Despite the disappointing end to the season, the 2019-2020 event was the Royals 4th consecutive Championship appearance, tying a program record.  Almost as impressive, the 4th place finish in the competitive OCAA West Division was Redeemer's lowest since the 2015-2016 season. The Royals remain one of the top programs in the Province, with only two schools (Humber College, Mohawk College) having won more medals (6) in the past 10 years than Redeemer at 5. Redeemer has also qualified for 8 of the last 11 OCAA Provincial Championships.
