Johnston-goalHamilton, ON - The Redeemer University women's soccer team (0-1-1 OCAA) played to a 0-0 score against the Mohawk Mountaineers Wednesday night at Tim Hortons Field.

The Royals were without four starters due to injury, including regular starting goalkeeper Lilly Brown.

Third year midfielder Avery Johnston (Pickering, ON) stepped up and took over in goal as the third string goalkeeper and would come up with an outstanding performance.

In the opening two minutes, Mohawk would get two quick chances on goal, but it was Johnston standing tall and making two saves.

In the 31st minute, Mohawk would break through the Royals defense, and it was Johnston going airborne and coming up with the save of the match to keep the score 0-0.

In the second half, the Royals would play a lot stronger on the ball limiting the Mountaineers offensive opportunities.

"We changed up our defensive formation after the first half and it really worked in limiting their chances," said Royals head coach Meaghan Rudd. "Tonight we played hard for the entire 90 minutes and I was pleased the way the team came together to earn a much deserved point."

In the 56th minute, Redeemer second year forward Brooke Houwer (Fisherville, ON) would get their best opportunity and would miss wide of the goal.

Johnston finished the night with nine saves for her first career shutout in her university debut.

The Royals next contest is this Saturday, September 17th at 7pm when they host the Fanshawe Falcons.
