WELLAND, ON - The Redeemer University women's basketball team defeated the Niagara College Knights by the score of 62–57 Wednesday night on the road.
The Royals open the game with a 13–4 run in the opening four minutes and led by 15, 27–12 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Niagara put together a 14–3 run to cut the lead to four 30–26 was just under two minutes left in the half. Redeemer closed out the half with back to back baskets to make it 34-26 after 20 minutes.
To open the third quarter, the Knights put together a 10-2 run tying the game 36-36 with five minutes. The Royals, who scored just nine points in the quarter, held a two point lead, 43-41 after 30 minutes.
Early in the fourth quarter, Niagara would take their first lead of the game and hold a 47-45 lead, before Redeemer answered back with an 8-2 run to go up 53-49 with five minutes left. The Knights would tie it up 53-53 and again at 55-55 with just over a minute left in regulation.
Second year guard Karyn TeBrake (Ottawa, ON) was clutch in the final minute, knocking down two jumpers and one free throw to close out the game as the Royals escaped with the five-point victory.
The Royals had three starters in double figures led by TeBrake who finished with 19 points and nine rebounds. First year duo of Julia Stayshyn (Dundas, ON) and Talia Vreugdenhil (Frankford, ON) combined for 25 points and 25 rebounds. Stayshyn added 15 points and 15 rebounds for the double-double and Vreugdenhil also added the double-double contributing with 10 points and 10 boards. Fourth year Jessica Angelini (Hamilton, ON) chipped in with nine points in the win.
For the game, Redeemer shot 36.5% (23-63) from the field, 28.6% (6-21) from long range and 83.3% (10-12) from the free throw line. Niagara went 22-81 (27.2%) from the floor, 3-18 (16.7%) from beyond the arc and 76.9% (10-13) from the charity stripe. The Royals won the battle on the glass 52-38.
