ANCASTER, ON Redeemer welcomed the nationally ranked St. Clair Saints to the Redeemer Athletic Centre Saturday January 20, 2024. The Saints are having another stellar season with an 11-2 record. The Saints only losses have come from the number one team in the province, the Humber Hawks. The Saints present an experienced roster which includes a former All-Canadian, Kianna Huggins. Huggins currently leads the OCAA in kills per set and will be a key factor that the Royals had to slow down.
The Royals have been off to a great start to the 2024 calender year, as they have yet to drop a set. Saturday's match was an opportunity to show the OCAA the "New year New Royals".
The Royals started Saturday's match hot out of the gates and jumped to an early lead. St. Clair was stunned by the service aggression and tactical offense delivered by Redeemer and could not regain their composure during the first set. The Royals jumped to a 1-0 lead and carried their momentum into the second set as they led 5-0. St.Clair managed to flip a switch early in the second set and began to play "St.Clair Volleyball". The Saints did not look back as they rallied to take sets two, three and four in convincing fashion.
The Royals win streak comes to an end at the hands of a top CCAA program. They will look to start another win streak Wednesday as they travel to face the Niagara Knights.
Redeemer falls to 8-7 and 2 games out of third place. The last few weeks of regular season will be critical for playoff seeding as the Royals look to climb the ranks.
