ANCASTER, ON. The second match in Sudbury, ON. had the Royals take on the Cambrian Shield on Saturday afternoon. The OCAA West match-up had the two mid-table sides face off to determine the standings entering the winter break. Redeemer 5-5 looked to maintain their position on the 4-5 Cambrian Shield. Entering Saturday's match, Cambrian was riding the momentum of two significant wins against 3rd and 4th place Mohawk Mountaineers and Niagara Knights.
Redeemer opened the match firing. Taking the first set 25-20, the Royals looked to secure a crucial road victory.
The Shield bounced back. Sparked by the home crowd, Cambrian took the next three sets 25-18, 25-17, 25-11. The Shield took advantage from the service line recording 14 aces.
Alanna Heidbuurt had a standout performance for the Royals. The outside hitter recorded a team-high 14 points.
Carlene Cecchelli led Redeemer's defensive efforts with 9 digs.
Redeemer finishes the first semester with a 5-6 record and sits sixth in the OCAA west standings.The Royals have displayed their ability to play with the best in the division. Royals fans will want to keep a close eye on the women's volleyball team next semester as they are equipped to make a strong playoff showing.
Redeemer is back in action on January 8th when they host the undefeated Humber Hawks.
