Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Simpson's Late Game Heroics Improves Royals to 2-0-0

ANCASTER, ON.  Redeemer Royals Women's Soccer (1-0-0) travelled to Cambridge, ON Wednesday night to face the Conestoga Condors (1-0-0). The Royals, carrying momentum from last weekend's victory seek to add another tally to the win column.

It has been a monumental week for the Redeemer Women's Soccer program. The program ranks third in the OCAA Provincial power rankings and thirteenth in the CCAA National power rankings. Redeemer's thirteenth ranking is one of the highest in program history. The recognition does not stop there. Second-year forward Joelle Mitton was named OCAA Star of the Week and CCAA Athlete of the Week.

Redeemer women's soccer looked to even the score with the Condors after being eliminated by Conestoga in the OCAA playoffs last season.

Wednesday's match saw Redeemer in full control through the first forty-five minutes. The Royals out-shot Conestoga three to one in the first half, however, neither side could find the back of the net.

The Royals picked up where they left off as they began the second half. Redeemer forward Audrey Benjamins drew a penalty kick in the forty-ninth minute.  Fifth-year midfielder Mia Palango stepped up to the dot for the Royals but was stopped by the outstretched hand of the Condors keeper. The Royals continued the offensive pressure and possession through the sixty-fifth minute.

Conestoga kicked into extra gear and dominated late in the second half. Multiple chances for the Condors were stopped by the Royals first-year keeper Jasmine DeBoer and the defensive line.

Deja vu for Royals fans with time running out, Royals fifth-year Alyssa Simpson won the ball in the Conestoga half and threaded a ball past the keeper. Redeemer took a 1-0 lead in the eighty-seventh minute.

Redeemer women's soccer improves to 2-0-0 on the season. They are 1/2 OCAA West teams that remain undefeated. Redeemer will look to add another three points this weekend when they host the St.Clair Saints in their home opener.

Redeemer Royals Soccer home opener is Saturday, September 14th at David Mantel Field. The men's team plays at 2:00 PM with the women's match at 4:00 PM.
