ANCASTER, ON - The Redeemer Royals women's basketball team opened their 2025–26 season at home on Friday, October 17th, against the Mohawk Mountaineers, falling 80–58.
Despite being limited to just seven players, the Royals battled hard through all four quarters. Redeemer trailed 41–36 at halftime after a strong first half but was unable to maintain momentum down the stretch as Mohawk capitalized on turnovers to pull away late.
First-year forward Sophia Van Raalte impressed in her debut, leading the Royals with 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Fourth-year forward
Talia Vreugdenhil also turned in a standout performance, posting a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double and anchoring the team with her veteran presence.
While Redeemer won the rebounding battle, their 30 turnovers compared to Mohawk's 13 proved to be the difference on the night.
The Royals will look to regroup and build on the positives as they continue their early-season schedule next week.
