Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

VanRaalte Adds Third Consecutive Double-Double in Narrow Loss to Knights

WELLAND, ON - Royals Women's basketball made the trip to Welland, ON, to face the Niagara Knights Saturday afternoon. The Knights were hosting their 'ReuKnighted' alumni event, which featured a full slate of action.

Niagara women's basketball has been a formidable opponent the last few seasons, stringing together several winning seasons, finding themselves on and around the OCAA podium at the end of the season. However, it's a new year for the Knights, and they find themselves with a 1-5 record sitting in last place of the OCAA West behind the Royals.

Redeemer entered the match eager to pick up their second win of the season. The Royals have been playing well early in the campaign, despite their 1-4 record. Redeemer has been in most games they have played, but with a limited roster, they have fizzled out late in the match. With recent additions to the roster from the injury reserve, Redeemer looked to pick up a much-needed win.

The Royals fell behind early and couldn't quite mount the full comeback despite outscoring Niagara in the final quarter, ultimately falling 77–65. A major factor in the loss came from points off turnovers. Redeemer surrendered 25 points off giveaways while generating only 3 in return, making the uphill climb even tougher.

One positive for the Royals was their continued strength on the glass. Redeemer once again out-rebounded their opponent, but unfortunately, the extra possessions didn't translate into a significant advantage in second-chance points.

Rookie standout Sophia VanRaalte continued her impressive debut season, recording her third consecutive double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. She also added an assist and two blocks, maintaining her position as the OCAA leader in total blocks (18) and blocks per game (3.0).

Redeemer also welcomed back Sydney Lazenby from injury, providing a valuable boost to the lineup. Lazenby contributed 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists in her return.
