WELLAND, ON - Redeemer men's soccer began the new campaign against the Niagara Knights on Friday night. The new Royals squad is poised and determined to bring the program to new heights. Last season, the Royals defeated the Knights 2-nil.
Redeemer wasted zero time in finding the back of the net. Royals' second-year striker
Ethan Smith opened the scoring on the season off a deflected ball hit by
Cormac O'Brien. Shortly after, Redeemer continued their offensive attack and capitalized on a corner kick, headed in by
Eli Mudde. The Royals' early 2-nil lead stunned the Knights. Redeemer maintained the early pressure, adding several high-quality scoring opportunities.
Niagara answered twice in five minutes of action to level the score.
Through the first forty-five minutes, the Royals executed their counter-attack at a tremendous rate. Redeemer quickly progressed up the field and delivered a scoring opportunity numerous times in the first half. At the halftime whistle, the Royals controlled the majority of the play, despite the 2-2 tie.
Cormac O'Brien was a standout performer in the opening half. The first-year midfielder delivered the corner on the Royals' second goal. O'Brien could be seen all over the pitch dictating the pace of play while also contributing several high-danger scoring opportunities himself.
Second-half action was closely contested and fast-paced. Neither side was able to separate itself from its opponent as they traded partial breakaways and scoring opportunities.
Royals' first year,
Georgiy Gavalov nearly took the lead in the 78th minute. Gavalov directed a header from a corner kick off the crossbar. Minutes later, fellow first-year Royal
Sam Barnhoorn delivered a game-saving stop to keep the game tied.
Friday's match ended in a 2-2 draw. Redeemer opens the season 0-0-1; however, the young Royals roster appeared strong and versatile. Redeemer fans won't want to miss a second of this team in action this fall.
The Royals are back in action Friday, September 12th, when they visit the Mohawk Mountaineers.
